Qualified professional as newcomer in Germany

As a professional looking for work in Germany, there are two options to be enabled to do this, namely applying for either a job seeker visa or through the Skilled Labour Immigration Act. The Blue Card can be an alternative, being categorized as a subset of working migration methods to Germany for non-EU professionals.

The chart below shows the German unemployment rate in recent years. According to the chart, the unemployment trend in Germany, with the exception of the global financial crisis, has been steadily declining since 2005 and this clearly shows unique opportunities to migrate through work or economic investment in Germany.

In the following part, we will introduce each of these two methods and the necessary conditions.

Job seeker visa

To obtain a job seeker visa, you must have a Bachelor’s, Master’s or doctoral degree, and your specialty must be on the list published by the German Department of Migration. The job seeker visa is issued for 6 months and during this period, you can apply for targeted jobs and have personal job interviews (in Germany). If you and the employer decide you suite for each other, you will be able to obtain a work visa. Getting a job seeker visa usually costs less compared to other types of visas.

Skilled Immigration Visa

As the name implies, this type of visa will be granted to you if you have a job offer from an employer in Germany. The prerequisites for a job offer are, as usual, finding a job that fits your expectations and your professional expertise, following a job application process and finally, the agreement with the employer for fulfilling the job requirements. Specialized visas are usually issued for 4 years. By obtaining this visa, you will also be able to move your spouse and children under the age of 18 along with yourself to Germany.

Requirements for obtaining a job seeker visa

  • A Bachelor’s degree (at least)
  • A minimum of 3 years of work experience related to the field of study
  • B1 certification in the German language
